Find the clues and lift the flaps on this mathematical mystery!

Join Molly as she ventures into a curious world where nothing is quite as it seems. A trail of clues leads from scene to scene, presenting Molly with a number of challenges. But who is leaving the clues, and where will they lead? This interactive mystery shows math isn't just about numbers—it’s about imagination! An explorative and creative approach to the world of mathematics.

The reader is challenged to solve puzzles on every page, based on the clues left by Molly. In solving the puzzles, one needs to flip the pop-ups, connect them, fold them, weave them, mess with them...After all that mess about, VoilĂ ! the secrete of math reveals itself in front of your eyes! Often, my 7-year-old and I are not quite sure what happened and how it had happened, we were simply captured by the new discovery and the amazement, and we are filled with so much excitement and curiosities that we just want to keep on exploring. It was an overwhelmingly fun book, I had to ration the book for two pages a day so that we can immerse in this fun for a whole week.

My original goal was to find a book that teaches math is not just numbers and the four basic operations (which is what first-grade school math all about). My daughter was learning to hate math from school math. I think this book is a strong rebuttal that math is boring and constraining. It has revealed so much freedom in playing with math.

Finally, this book is exquisitely beautiful and well designed. Love and recommend to readers and players of all ages.

Title: My kindergartener is enchanted, and so am I!

Review: I am always on the lookout for children's math books that actually spark children's curiosity and engage the in mathematical thinking, rather than just having them absorb the mathematics as it's presented. It's hard to do, but this book does it beautifully. My kindergartener was instantly hooked, and has been begging me to read it with her. The illustrations are beautiful, and as a math teacher, I love how the book engages with big idea mathematics (infinity, self-symmetry, dimensions), and especially imagination. Imagination and creativity were largely missing from my own childhood mathematics experiences, and I love sharing with my children the beauty of mathematics that it took me to adulthood to discover.

Review: My daughter and son both LOVE this book (4 and 6). It is not just the usual tricks and flip math books like tiling, symmetry, and fractals, but also weaving(!!) and combinations, and other fun stuff. It's a super unique book!

Title: I Forgot How Beautiful Children's Books Can Be
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2020
Review: This book is so lovely! It's really big, and it's printed on heavy cardstock paper. I haven't read all of the notes for Molly yet because I don't want to crease the pages before I give it away as a gift. But I've read the rest of the story and it's just a really fun book to play with. Molly goes to different places and they're all decorated with tons of color all over the pages and intricate designs. There are lots of different flaps and things besides the little notes for Molly. My favorite page has a big spinning wheel with all these moving discs. Definitely the kind of book I would have spent a long time with when I was 9. There's also a section in the back with a few more mathematical concepts and definitions beyond the ones mentioned in the story. I think those might be geared towards the older kids that read this book. All of the math terms have a definition using picture examples and I learned a few things even as an adult, LoL. :)

Title: A book that is a maze

Review: This is a book that is a maze. And it is unusual, as you will usually have to change the maze in order to get to the next page. And there are hints along the way. The book says that it is for ages 7-10. That seems about right.

Title: Age appropriate for 9-14 but adults will be challenged, too! A must purchase!

Review: Books that teach children how to think critically are worth their weight in gold. This book does just that by presenting Molly in a series of mathematical puzzles and the like that young readers have to figure out, using what they learn about each topic, to guide Molly along. Myriad flaps are lifted to reveal solutions, and notes from Molly encourage the reader along. The topics include: inverse relationships, our 2-D versus 3-D world, tessellation, infinity, Latin Squares, counting combinations, symmetry and fractals. All of the new concepts are presented and explained at the end of the book. The fold outs are exquisitely cut, the adventures are fun and the puzzles encourage young readers to learn how to figure out problems on their own, the goal of all math teachers. Parents and teachers should just hand this book to their child and say, “Have a go at these!” Children who are not afraid to think will be immediately captivated.

Title: Super cool
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021
Review: Since the day it arrived in my house, Molly and the Mathematical Mysteries has held wide interest. The title and cover immediately caught my 7-year-old’s eye. In fact, I’ve had to keep the book hidden so that she doesn’t hide it from me!

From the beginning, Molly and the Mathematical Mysteries goes beyond numbers and equations. In fact, it begins with: “Math is really about exploring ideas and using our imagination. It’s a way of making sense of the world — or of making seemingly impossible things possible.”

The adventure begins with turning things inside out, followed by impossible objects, hidden shapes, endless doors, cubes, carpet weaving, counting combinations, symmetry, fractals, and time as a fourth dimension. Each topic flows into the next, so it should be read from front to back rather than jumping around. A section with more math at the end helps readers look beyond what’s in the book.

I can see multiple uses for Molly and the Mathematical Mysteries. It would work well in a home-school setting or during the summer to keep minds fresh. The interactive nature of the book will appeal to more tactile readers/learners. Most importantly, even though the book is educational, it doesn’t feel like it’s educational, making it a fun option for kids who like puzzles and mysteries.
